"Oak Island" Producer Claims Sword Was Purchased to Discredit Pulitzer

2/1/2016

Picture
The drama of #Swordgate continues, unmitigated by the fact that the Nova Scotia sword has been fairly conclusively demonstrated to be of modern manufacture.

If you're still on the fence about whether the sword is Roman or not, you're probably eagerly looking forward to the latest "proof" that we're told is on the way: a 200-page document that J. Hutton Pulitzer says will finally make the case for the sword and show why he's right and everyone else is wrong. The report, we're told, is supposed to be released on "the 15th." I presume that's the 15th of February but, as one person on Facebook remarked, it could just as easily refer to the 15th of Nevuary. I've learned not to hold my breath for these things.

I wanted to pass on a statement this morning by Kevin Burns, the executive producer of The Curse of Oak Island. Burns wrote a letter to Frank Magazine in response to a story by Mike Gorman titled "The Curse of Hoax Island" (Frank Magazine is only accessible online with a subscription, but I wrote a bit about the original story here and you can find a scan posted here). Regarding the sword, Burns writes the following (emphasis in original):

"Rick, Marty, and Craig Tester reluctantly purchased the sword -- at my urging -- on the remote chance it could be real. We always knew it would have to be professionally tested . . .
We never claimed otherwise. Testing it on camera, however, was essential if we were ever going to quiet Mr. Pulitzer.
Therefore, purchasing the sword was done to (A) test it to see if it could be real, (B) discredit Mr. Pulitzer and (C) create compelling television."
So it appears that Pulitzer is correct, in a sense, that he has been the victim of a conspiracy.  It has not been a conspiracy to hide the Romanity of the sword from the world, however, but a conspiracy to make him look bad.  I would say that Burns' plan succeeded.  All he had to do was provide the petard.  Pulitzer was apparently all too happy to hoist himself on it.

There will be a guest blog post coming later today from someone who knows much more about swords than I do - stay tuned!

..but but but but it is 100% confirmed Roman!!!

Rickk Wright

Sorry this sword theory may sound convincing but im not buying it. For one thing you get heresay information about Roman ships coming to Nova scotia area but not a single Roman wreck has been established in any of the area even thou rumors abound that deep waters north of oak island there is sopposed to be such a wreck...Where's the evidene....pics ect.... would be nice. Ok not to harp on the subject the sword looks too new and intact to have come out of saltwater in such a good condition without some deterioration of some suchj of the sword..... just looks too perfect. No roman coins or any other type of equipment ore encampments from the Roman era have been found thus so far. Prove me wrong i will eat my words... and lump it if its true......untill that day show the evidence. As far as actual treasure found on oak island ,it seems there are bits and pieces of coins that have been found metal detecting but this so far is it. The drilling being done on that island seems to be real but this show seems sort of scripted and is showing signs of just stringing along the watchers . Too many regulations and environmental statements make it way too hard to actually do any real treasure hunting.....

Hi Rickk,

You're a little late to the party. The sword(s) were a pretty big joke by this point, and the assertion of "100% confirmed" had been blown out of the water in multiple ways. Check out all these posts:

This review provides conclusive enough information for me..

That is as close to factual information, Ive heard so far. I hope Hutton is effected by this article and stops his tirade.

Do you mean "affected"?

Killbuck

Or infected.

I, for one, stopped believing in fairy tales long ago and until I see the oft-threatened white paper, I will not believe in that either. If it does appear I intend to check the names of the peers who will have supposedly juried it. I expect to see names like Erich von Daniken, Graham Hancock and Jovan Philyaw on the list of reviewers

The Lagina brothers could have saved the $10,000 spent on the sword, and still discredited Pulitzer.

Joe Scales
2/1/2016 07:36:50 pm

When you get right down to it, the Laginas are also pushing lies by misstating facts each and every week in perpetuating the treasure hoax for the contrived Curse of Oak Island television show. Though they may not offend to the extent of Pullitzer/Philyaw, they poison the well nonetheless and are ultimately of the same ilk.

Rose McDonald
2/25/2016 02:58:56 pm

Maybe they should have allowed Pulitzer to go on the show with an entire segment of his "theory" and just stand aside while he made a complete fool of himself. The biggest benefit would have been that he wouldn't have any basis for his claims that the OI team is trying to hide his history-changing revelations.

Commander Pulitzer should henceforth be known as Captain Petard.

Congratulations, Julius! According to Weebly, ours was the 2000th comment on my blog (not counting ones I've deleted). And a fine one it was. I agree 100%: Captain Petard it is!

Mona Godfrey link
2/1/2016 10:44:29 pm

Given Mr. Burners statement that he urged Rick & Marty to purchase the sword to "discredit" Mr. Pulitzer, perhaps the sword was an e-bay purchase, not the real sword. I could easily see a producer want to make a monkery to discredit Mr. Pulitzer, while his show gets high ratings and all he has to do is sit back and laugh. TV will do anything for ratings

Andy White
2/2/2016 07:41:06 am

It really does bring up the issue of the original "discovery" story again, doesn't it? i think it's perfectly plausible that someone local produced the sword out of an attic and innocently repeated the story that he/she had been told (i.e., "my great grandfather pulled this out of the water"). But I also thinks one can come up with alternative scenarios for how the sword entered the picture.

Eric
2/2/2016 02:44:15 pm

Andy isn't that Fraud what this guy said they did? How can I take what you write and any other who wants to discredit Hutton seriously anymore when every time someone write something it turns out not to be true and pure BS. One minutes it's the eBay sword 100% proof then it's the Florida 100% proof then the show does the testing oh it's just a modern 1800 sword see show said so even though anyone that doesn't believe everything they see on TV can search her test results and find they are found in artifacts dating from 1800's but also found in artifacts 2500 years ago, which as I though she would do, take the safe guess 1800's and why did she not do a XRF test to compare Hutton results? which but this story is now proof he did test the sword because they tried to pull a fast one on him so they say. Now this next BS story is they bought the sword to disprove Hutton come on Andy do you really believe this BS. You can keep wasting your time trying to disprove the sword it means nothing if it is real or a fake because the story on how it was found will always be in question and doesn't do anything for Hutton theory but bring attention to his work and thanks to you and all the other haters you brought more traffic to his site. Whether you like his theory or not more people are now going to want to hear and see what his proof is thanks to you. The real evidence which I can't wait to see how you try to disprove this one is the stone carvings on the Island that can be dated and points back to who made them.

Billybob
2/2/2016 04:33:07 pm

Oh my goodness!!! What in the world was that rant?!? I'm sorry Eric or whoever you are you truly need to understand the JHP motives and jury of "not his peers" who have all but put this sword debacle to bed. And really, you too want to begin #stonegate. As much as I am on the side of the Andy et al fence and you are on the other side we shall see things differently. And to each their own I suppose.

Pablo
2/2/2016 05:45:30 pm

Eric, it would be great if you study even the basics of the Scientific Method. Nobody has to prove anything, except for Hutton. Is his claim that the sword is 100% Roman. The owners wanted to know if it was real or not, so they commissioned a test that proved the sword is not a roman sword. If Hutton gets 20 billion visits to his site, still the sword is not going to be roman and still doesn't prove that Romans made it to Nova Scotia. Mickey Mouse has 14 million likes on facebook, and still that doesn't make him a real person :D

Billybob

Whoa whoa whoa back up a second!!!! Mickey Mouse is not a real person? Say it isn't so!!

Pablo

The one thing that "Eric" is right, is that people want to hear "his" proof. WE WANT TO! We've been asking for the White Paper for weeks! Looks like he finally is going to release something but only to a limited amount of people that he approves. Is he afraid of scrutiny?

This text was wrote in spanish because my english level isn´t good. I hope you can excuse it.

Although Hutton was entertaining to watch, I don't believe that a public discrediting was a wise choice. Any proprely educated anthropology major would, and most likely does, recognize his false clames or rather misplaced conviction. I still love a good and easily recanizable conspiracy theroy. Some of the most unlikely finds were initially found accidentally by eccentric people. Consider the 19th century showman who found the ruins of a lost city in Africa just to loose it again due to poor documentation. He STILL found it in the first place. I have found that burning bridges may seem like a good idea in the moment, but not always in the long run. He is charismatic.

I dislike seeing the SAME clip 4x in total when an old episode ends and a new one airs. I never understood why they all dont man metal detectors. Is there only one in Nova Scotia, and do you need a degree operate it? Also I would be dropping a Geiger counter down all holes, and some type of basic metal detector as well.
