My Crow Sculpture Won First Place at the South Carolina State Fair

10/9/2016

Here's some nice news for a Sunday afternoon: my crow sculpture won first place in the amateur sculpture competition at the South Carolina state fair (the judging results are here). It must have won something else as well, since the award money is listed as $1500 and the prize money for first place in the amateur sculpture class is $200.

I'm not going to spoil it by writing an essay. I'll just say that it makes me pretty happy, and I'm totally going to post a picture of me and the crow when I visit it at the fair. Thank you to everyone who has encouraged me in this hobby.

Update (10/12/2016):  It did indeed win Best of Show in the amateur division. Miller Time!

Best use of silverware? Worst technical welding?

My guess is it won best of show. That's the only thing that makes sense with the award amounts on the list.

This marvelous sculpture reminds me of Orlando airport's former resident alligator, the very real "Chester the Dog-Eater." (In a round-about way.)

A crow I might dubb "Chester the Toad-Eater" came to visit my birdbath a few years ago...and decided to make it into a macabre eating station. This toad-eater crow would land on a nearby garage-top and then hop down to my birdbath to make an apparently succulent selection once in a while. I decided to see what Chester was doing one day and was horrified to see toad parts (a dozen or more) floating like little brown rubber duckies in my birdbath!

Looking your sculpture over, Andy, I see in its powerful jaws, Chester the Toad-Eater...wonderfully balanced...hesitating over which to choose: a plump rear quarter or a front leg and head section...clip, clip, clip....

Questions: Have you named your bird yet? Would you consider "Chester?" Thanks!

My wife owns 51% of the crow, so you'll have to convince her.

A very well deserved win for a finely repurposed work of art. Congratulations Andy!

Replace the horns on the triceratops with a couple Design Toscanos and submit it next year.
