Fake Hercules Sword #24: The Sea Sword

2/23/2017

Maybe you thought you'd never live to see the documentation of Fake Hercules Sword Number 24. Congratulations: you made it.

The 24th sword comes to us from Matt Sea, who emailed me about his sword a couple of days ago. He says he acquired the sword in 1998 during a family visit to Pompeii. The sword was purchased from a roadside vendor. Sea's parents "remember the vendor we bought it from had various swords, armor, and things like that. The vendor was also near where our tour bus dropped us off near the entrance of Pompeii."  Matt says he sanded the patina from parts of the sword when he was young.

Here are some photos:

In the last image of the front of the blade (immediately above), a vaguely Texas-shaped depression is visible. I made an illustration showing the comparable areas of the other swords that we've classified as "Type CS." The same depression is clearly visible on the Cvet sword (Sword 12). I'm pretty sure I can see it in the photo of Sword 13 (Alejandro), and it's possibly (barely) discernible on Sword 10 (Florida eBay). I can't see it on Sword 15 (Frioacero).

What does this mean? If that Texas-shaped depression -- clearly visible on the Sea and Cvet swords -- isn't present on some of the other swords we're calling CS, we're going to have to subdivide.

I'm hoping to get a chance to examine Sword 24 firsthand. It will be the first CS I've been able to look at up close. If my current chronological model is correct, the metrics of the Hercules figure on Sword 24 should fall somewhere between those of the Italian eBay (Type J) sword and the Design Toscano sword.

24 looks to have a rather fresh casting. The gashing on the back of the hilt and on the front at the knee might be a result of casting flaws in the sand mold, requiring them to be sawn off etc.

Again rough even crude finishing, dull blade.

More to come!!!

Could be, but the rough parts there might also just be a legacy of the sanding (possibly filing?) that was done to remove the patina. It's worth asking the owner if it was like that when new.

Andy: I just looked at My DT copy of the sword and noticed a very slight indentation in roughly the same spot as the Texas-shaped one. It's about 1.75" down the front of the blade from the three fake rivet bumps where the blade suddenly gets a tiny bit thinner along a fairly straight line. I have not noticed that dent before and only saw it just now because of the angle of the light I was viewing it at.

I guess I'm mostly bringing it up because I am curious if you copy has the same feature. The dent/depression is not Texas-shaped, but might blade size manipulation and copy effect have had an effect here or is this depression just a coincidence? I guess that depends on where in the chronology of sword development you decide this one fits.

Perhaps this question and answer by the sword owner will help with "...but the rough parts there might also just be a legacy of the sanding (possibly filing?) that was done to remove the patina. It's worth asking the owner if it was like that when new."

Killbuck Norman: Matt- were the apparent gashes-sawing etc marks on the hilt when obtained?

Matt Sea: I believe so, I got it when I was very young. The blade was sanded by me, because as a kid I thought it looked cooler

This one might be a candidate for some restoration work. I agree with the match to 12, but the others are tough. I gave a quick look over the few pictures we have of the backs of the blades for anomalies that might match in CS but nothing jumped out - will spend more time later.

Andy, I think you need to make t-shirts that read "My parents went to Pompeii and all I got was this lousy 100% confirmed real Roman sword!"

A gen-u-ine replica of Jim Bowie's knife.
