Announcing "Afterburner," May 2017 at Tapp's Arts Center

If you've ever wanted to see the stuff I make but were afraid to ask, I invite you to come and have a look at Tapp's Art Center in Columbia, South Carolina. Pretty much everything I've done recently will be on display, including all the large sculptures that currently occupy my backyard. As long as we can do it without anyone getting hurt, we're going to haul them out of the garden and onto a pickup truck for a trip downtown. That should be fun.

I've spent a significant chunk of my discretionary time over the last month trying to get things ready to go. I fixed the rabbit's head, built a wooden base for the T-rex, finished the heron, and applied Penetrol to a couple of the outdoor pieces that I hope to sell. I still need to spiff up my giant dragonfly and my first triceratops and sign many of the pieces. All the small stuff is mostly ready to go.

I'm currently working on another large piece that I originally hoped I could complete in time for the show, but I don't think it's going to happen. I don't want to rush it.

Here is the description I wrote for the show:
"My work embraces the idea that our lives are entangled with things: we use them, abuse them, lose them, and throw them away. To my eye, that rough exposure to the world can add an unfakeable, unmistakable beauty to an object that is otherwise shiny and boring. Rust, scratches, and faded paint become markers for memories, reminders of what happened during a life lived. Through our interactions with them, some of our things become meaningful.

Taking that debris – whether it’s something personal or something anonymous that I plucked from the curb – and using it to create something new allows me to transform the slippery connection between the past and present into a tangible thing that I can handle and hold. For me, tuning all of these worn out pieces into an object with new life adds energy to the past in the same way that an afterburner on a jet engine increases thrust by injecting fuel into the hot exhaust gasses. Cutting, shaping, and welding all of this stuff together is inefficient, but I know of no better way for me to make the past part of the present.”
This is the first time I've done anything like this. It's a strange feeling.

Here is the event on Facebook. If you're in the area, I hope you can stop by and support the arts in Columbia.

The "stylized" dinosaur in the Afterburner ad above, is almost exactly how I wanted to do the owl. Very cool, but they beat me to it.
Congrats man

It wasn't "they," it was me! Just a few Photoshop filters and semi-transparent layers over a photo of my T-Rex. I'm very interested to see what you come up with!

Oops. Sorry. I feel like an ass for assuming it was event staff. I'm working on a pen and ink mock up of the owl currently as well as a couple of "punk rock" ideas. I touch base you via email in a few days.
Cheers man!

Your synopsis sounds all liberal touchy-feely - perfect for an art exhibition catalogue (although I'm not sure I "get" the afterburner analogy). Anyway, it sounds more sophisticated than, "I take old junk and turn it into cool shit."

Best of luck!, have a great show!, and I hope everyone appreciates your vision, creativity, and talent (and you make a few sales). :-)

Thanks!

I picked "Afterburner" for a couple of reasons. It describes an "extra" process that occurs after the first one (the primary working of the turbines, etc.), building on the first one and adding energy. Afterburners sort of take the output of something that's already over and throw fuel into the mix. And burning is a fundamental transformation. And I like aircraft stuff.

Fair enough! I guess I couldn't process "adding energy to the past."

How do you reconcile using Penetrol with "rough exposure to the world can add an unfakeable, unmistakable beauty.... Rust, scratches, and faded paint become markers for memories..." Is it strictly for preservation to lock in the look it already has? Leaving them exposed would add more weathering and rust. I guess it's a balancing act. More rust, and there might actually be structural issues down the road. I know with antiques it is always preferable not to add anything modern in terms of finishing products, but it's not like you put an antique out in the rain.

With the exception of the occasional piece of new rebar, everything I use is already old and worn to one degree or another. I often pick individual parts for their "old" color and texture. All the Penetrol does is halt or slow down the degeneration and preserve the mix of colors that are there at the time. I've learned from experience that if I just put something outside and forget about it, the rust colors all even out to a medium brown over time, which isn't that interesting.

The Penetrol adds a gloss, which I don't always want. I have yet to find a better solution for outdoor sculptures though.

My family and I attended Romeo and Juliet at Tapps Art Center last night and were OVERJOYED to be able to walk through some of your awesome work. All 6 of us have our favorites. The Gamecocks fighting, T rex, The Owl, The Crow, etc. I LOVE repurposed art and believe that the sign of a true artist is being able to see some thing as something totally different from what it once was. My husband uses paperclips to make crucifixes, which I think is pretty cool, too.
AMAZING ART!!!!!
